![]() Glossary 1. Alloy A substance composed of two or more metals, or of a metal and a nonmetal, intimately mixed, as be fusing or electrodepositing.2. Aluminium A ductile, malleable, silver-white metallic element that is used in forming many hard, light alloys, often anodized for better corrosion resistance, color and surface hardness.3. Chrome To coat or plate a metal surface with a compound of chromium. Also called Chrome plating.4. Chromium A lustrous, hard, brittle metallic element used in alloy steels for hardness and corrosion resistance, and for electroplating other metals.5. Design Design is the creation and organization of formal elements in a work of art. It consists of various form and shape. It's a fundamental and comprehensive concept of visual perception for structuring an aesthetic composition. Some design principles includes emphasis, contrast, anomaly etc. Others like movement, direction, rhythm, repetition, interval and concatenation.6. Electroplating To plate with an adherent metallic coating by electrolysis, usually to increase the hardness, improve the durability, or enhance the appearance of the base metal. E.g. Gold-plating.7. Galvanize To coat metal, especially iron or steel, with zinc, especially to immerse in molten zinc to produce a coating of zinc-iron alloy.8. Wrought Iron The iron used by the Blacksmith, up until the 1700's, has a very low carbon content (0.04%) and could be considered as nearly pure iron. It was very ductile and malleable, but relatively soft, with a fibrous structure of impurities and could only be hardened after increasing the carbon content. Nowadays we use a carbon alloy of iron that is known as "Sweet" or "Mild" Steel with a higher carbon content of between 0.2% and 0.6% and with superior strength. The modern blacksmith will use electric welding for a quicker, more reliable join.9. Zinc It is a ductile, crystalline, bluish-white metallic element used for galvanizing iron or steel and also in making other alloys.
